About Retail Theft

CHAART is the acronym for the Aldersgate CHanging Attitudes About Retail Theft program. It is specifically designed to serve as a mandated alternative sentence for teens and young adults who have contact with courts or police due to offenses involving shoplifting or retail theft. CHAART is a program whose basic format is customized to address the particular issues, both legal and personal, of the individual participant.

CHAART consists of four, one-hour group sessions. The group fee of $150 is due at the first meeting and can be paid with cash or credit card (*note there is an additional fee of $5.00 for credit card payment). Participants will not be admitted to the first group session unless payment is made in full and are only permitted to miss one group session, which will be made up on an individual basis for a fee of $35.00. If participant misses the first session a re-enrollment fee of $35.00 will be charged.

CHAART enrollment can be initiated by calling Aldersgate at 215-657-4545.

Enrollment is completed through a brief phone interview with the Intake Coordinator. The assigned group facilitator will then contact the participant once a group has formed to schedule the first appointment.

CHAART program services include:
  1. an evaluation of participants’ overall retail theft history;
  2. examination and assessment of other at-risk behaviors, e.g. drug and alcohol use, etc.;
  3. an educational peer component focusing on retail theft;
  4. exploration of problem-solving and decision-making skills, social pressures, motivation and frustration as well as community and personal support systems to help prevent future retail theft;
  5. prompt documented feedback of program enrollment and completion to court, police, or other referral source;
  6. prompt notification of non-compliant or extreme at-risk behavior to referral source
